April 13: Earth Festival. 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Milford Central School. Earth Festival is an environmentally-focused, interactive event featuring exhibits, activities, vendors and entertainment, all with a fun, earth-friendly twist. Sponsored by OCCA and WildLearn.com.
April 13: Spring Garden Day with Master Gardeners of Cornell Cooperative Extension Schoharie and Otsego Counties. 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Milford Central School, in conjunction with Earth Festival 2012. Morning and afternoon classes on a wide variety of gardening topics suitable for both new and experienced gardeners. Morning session presentation topics will include garden design, composting, gardening with containers, and gardening using alternative methods. In the afternoon, Master Gardeners will provide new gardening product demonstrations and hands-on opportunities for participants to construct an alternative gardening project using recycle materials, such as a bottle garden or living wreath. Additionally, Master Gardeners will have a table at Earth Festival and will be available to answer any gardening questions.

Sale items accepted April 21-26, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. In addition to raising funds for OCCA programming, the garage sale also benefits the environment through waste prevention, or “source reduction.” Source reduction, including reuse, can help reduce waste disposal and handling costs, because it avoids the costs of recycling, municipal composting, land filling, and combustion. Source reduction also conserves resources and reduces pollution, including greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming.

May 11: Mother's Day Weekend Rail Trail Walk. 9 a.m. A three-mile section of the former Lackawanna Railroad right-of-way will be open from 9 a.m. to dusk for exploration. The corridor is managed and operated by the Utica, Chenango & Susquehanna Valley Route LLC. The South Columbia Station and Creamery exposition space will be open for the event and will serve as a hub where explorers can park and begin their journey on this historic trail from South Columbia to Richfield Springs. The privately-owned trail will be groomed for walking but is a somewhat rugged adventure for adults and children ages 12 and up. There are a few areas that are wet, so proper footwear is recommended. Parking is available in the Town of Columbia at the South Columbia Station, located 2.1 miles north of the intersection of Route 20 and 28 in the Town of Richfield. Head north on Route 28 at the intersection for 2.1 miles and turn left onto McKoons Road (“Mr. Shake” is located on the corner). We will walk the 2-mile stretch toward Cooperstown and return on the opposite side of the road toward Springfield for a total of 4 miles. Participants should bring work gloves. OCCA Program Director Travis Sauerwald will lead a hike through Basswood Pond State Forest using both the blue and yellow trails to form a figure 8 for a total of approximately 5 miles. Hikers should meet at the parking lot off of Basswood Road on the corner of Route 16 and Basswood Road. Trail difficulty ranges from easy to moderate. June 1: Green Links at the Leatherstocking Golf Course. 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
There will be a nature walk on Leatherstocking Golf Course. Course Superintendent Bernie Banas will lead the hike, during which he will talk about the integrated pest management program used at the golf course and about the “greening” of the course management. Participants will meet in the golf course parking lot, north of the Cooperstown Country Club. The entrance is approximately 200 feet north of The Farmers’ Museum church on State Route 80 – look for the opening in the stone wall and drive toward the lake, taking the left fork up the hill to the parking lot. Walkers are asked to meet at this location at 1:45 p.m. The event is free and open to the public, but pre-registration is preferred. Park worker Joe Ritton will lead a hike along Andy’s Trail aimed at identifying the park’s abundant wildflowers and vegetation. OCCA and Friends of Glimmerglass State Park are among the groups to host a Lake Appreciation Day on Saturday, July 13 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Glimmerglass State Park. This event is intended to bring members of OCCA and other area environmental and lake organizations, lake residents, families, and friends together for a day of fellowship and recreation on the shores of Otsego Lake. A hike, a picnic lunch, swimming, and kid's activities will be among the highlights, and lake-focused groups are welcome to exhibit in the closed pavilion. A picnic lunch will be provided from 12:30-2 p.m., including hamburgers, hot dogs and veggie burgers, salads, watermelon, cookies and assorted beverages. August 3: Summer Birds and Neo-Tropics at Milford State Forest. 9 a.m.
The Milford State Forest has been carefully managed since enduring a tornado in May 1998. The result is varied habitat for both flora and fauna, with scenes of quiet morning beauty. Led by Dave Kiehm, hikers will meet at 9 a.m. sharp at the DEC warehouse on Kelly Corners Rd. (about 1/2 mile south of its intersection with State Land Rd.) for a walk of 2 hours. Participants will look for the summer birds and neo-tropics that frequent the area. Bring binoculars if you have them and choose footwear appropriate for tall, wet grass. Patricia Riddell Kent and Steve Kent (the donors of the state park land) will lead a walk of the 200-acre field and creek portion of the park. This is a fairly easy walk over mostly flat terrain. The walk should take about 1-1.5 hours. Meet at the park’s entrance at Robert V. Riddell Rd., located off State Hwy. 28, to the right, just after taking I-88 Exit 17 or, if heading south on State Hwy. 28, the park entrance is on the left of State Rte. 28, just past the DOT gravel lot and tourist area at Lifgren Rd., located on the right. Walkers will see the old homestead and beautiful scenic vistas. September 7: American Chestnuts on Crumhorn Mountain.
Allen Nichols, District Leader for the American Chestnut Foundation, will lead a hike for participants to observe native American Chestnut trees with burrs and the effects of the chestnut blight on the tree. There are many trees in different stages of demise from the blight, with large and small cankers. Hikers should meet at Wightman's Lumber in Portlandville, and from there the group will proceed to Crumhorn Mountain. September 7: Sleeping Lion Trail at Glimmerglass State Park. 10 a.m.
The Sleeping Lion Trail, uphill and down through the forest at Glimmerglass State Park, affords peek-a-boo views of Otsego Lake while walking through majestic white pines, hemlocks and hardwoods. Participants should meet at the parking area next to the westerly pavilion at the base of the hill leading up to Hyde Hall. This moderately difficult 2-1/2-mile hike will be led by OCCA Board of Directors member Eamonn Hinchey. DIRECTIONS: The entrance to the park is on County Hwy. 31, 4.3 miles south of U.S. Hwy. 20 and 8 miles north of the center of Cooperstown. Patricia Riddell Kent and Steve Kent, who donated the land for this park, will guide a 4-hour walk on the 800-acre portion of The Robert V. Riddell State Park. Participants should meet at the Pine Lake Campus of Hartwick College. From there, they will carpool to The Robert V. Riddell State Park and proceed 4.5 miles through the park, to Mud Lake, and back to Pine Lake parking lot. If time permits, walkers will take a detour to a beautiful waterfall. Bring sufficient water and a snack. DIRECTIONS: From I-88 exit 16 or State Hwy. 7, take County Hwy. 47 east to West Davenport, 2.8 miles. Turn left on Charlotte Creek Rd. The entrance to Pine Lake is on the right, at 1.8 miles. Drive in the main entrance and park on the left, opposite the Robertson Center. From the traffic signal at Pindars Corners on State Hwy. 23, turn north on County Hwy. 11 and turn right on Charlotte Creek Rd. Continue 1.8 miles to the Pine Lake Campus and follow the directions above. January 18: Winter/ Snoshoe Hike at the Robert V. Riddell State Park. 12 p.m.
Patricia Riddell Kent and Steve Kent (the donors of the state park land) will lead a leisurely winter excursion to Mud Lake and back. This hike, on moderate grade terrain up South Hill and then back down to the starting point, will take about 3-1/2 hours to complete, with the option to return to the parking lot at any time. Snowshoes are optional if the snow is not too deep and participants are comfortable walking. Highlights of the hike are waterfalls along the way and Mud Lake, a sphagnum bog, at the top of South Hill. DIRECTIONS: Meet on Gersoni Road, just south of I-88’s Exit 17. If taking Exit 17 traveling east, make a right at the off ramp stop sign onto Gersoni Road. When taking Exit 17 traveling west, make a left and go under the I-88 overpass to access Gersoni Road.
