A large-scale recycling day in April where OCCA invites Otsego County residents to bring their hard-to-recycle items to Brewery Ommegang, where we collect them and recycle them. Each year, the OCCA recycling committee decides on items to be recycled, but past lists have included textiles, Styrofoam, shredding, and e-waste. The 2024 Drive-Through Drop-Off will happen on April 27.

OCCA, Otsego County Department of Solid Waste, and Casella Waste Management co-sponsor the challenge, which is modeled after a national challenge promoted by Trex Company, Inc. The purpose of the challenge is to educate youth and the community at large about the proper way of recycling of plastic bags and other film plastics. Bags and film plastics such as bubble wrap, wood pellet bags, food storage bags and package wrap cannot be recycled in curbside programs or at via County transfer stations. Instead, they are collected at most grocery stores and other large retailers. Film plastics can be recycled into a variety of new products, including composite lumber and decking; plastic bags; and pallets, crates and pipe.

The current challenge will run until April 14, 2024. Check with your local school district to see if they are participating.

Household Hazardous Waste Day (HHWD), is a way for residents and businesses to dispose of materials not-suitable for regular garbage processing. The program is sponsored by the Otsego County Solid Waste Department and occurs in August. Visit: Otsego County Solid Waste for specific details.
