Be Informed: Biologists at Work

  • 2nd Floor Ballroom at the Village Hall 22 Main Street Cooperstown, New York, 13326 United States (map)

Join Dr. Dan Stich and Dr. Alex Sotola of SUNY Oneonta for a pair of presentations which will showcase how research informs effective natural resource management. In “Understanding sea-run fish distributions and demographics from Otsego County to the Atlantic Ocean” Dr. Stich will focus on his and his students’ research on development and application of quantitative tools for understanding diadromous (sea-run) fish in New York and northeast North American, which can then be used to help make decisions about human influences and fishery harvest.

Dr. Sotola’s talk, “Applied population genetics of aquatic species: informing invasive species management and fisheries conservation” looks at the use of genome-wide sequencing to study interbreeding between hatchery-reared and wild populations of trout, as well as genetic diversity in populations of Eurasian watermilfoil, a common invasive plant. Dr. Sotola’s findings have implications for management practices for fish and plants alike.

This program will take place in the ballroom at the Village Hall in Cooperstown, 22 Main Street, Cooperstown. The program is free, but pre-registration is appreciated.
