Shoreline Monitors are community scientists who are passionate about water quality at Otsego Lake and Canadarago Lake, and keeping their communities safe from the effects of harmful algal blooms.

On a weekly basis, residents either survey their privately owned stretch of shoreline, or choose to adopt a public site to monitor.

Canadarago Lake Program

  • When: Weekly, June through October

  • Time Commitment: As little as 20 minutes per week, and survey results can be submitted via smartphone or computer

  • Where: Survey from your own, privately owned dock, stretch of shoreline, or even paddle/boat a larger distance.

Due to differing lake conditions, such as the amount of natural springs, number and condition of tributaries, and lake depth, Canadarago Lake can see HABs in the water as early as June

This volunteer program in partnership with Canadarago Lake Improvement Association, Otsego County Conservation Association, and the Department of Environmental Conservation.

Otsego Lake Program

  • When: Weekly, mid-July through October

  • Time Commitment: As little as 20 minutes per week, and survey results can be submitted via smartphone or computer

  • Where: Survey from your own, privately owned dock, stretch of shoreline, or even paddle/boat a larger distance. Not a lakeshore resident? Opt in to survey at certain approved public properties.

Due to differing lake conditions, such as the amount of natural springs, number and condition of tributaries, and lake depth, Otsego Lake generally starts to see HABs in the water around mid-July.

This volunteer program in partnership with Otsego Lake Association, Otsego County Conservation Association, the SUNY Oneonta Biological Field Station, the Watershed Supervisory Committee, and the Department of Environmental Conservation.
